The idea of being paid to play video games has been a pipe dream for many since the days of Donkey Kong. So much so that in 1989 there was a cutting edge ultra-cool movie made about competitive gaming. As a kid, being able to run the table at my local pizza parlor's Mortal Kombat cabinet gave me an inflated sense of confidence, completely overestimating my place in the international gaming ranks.
The idea of play to earn games where you can make money off of unique NFTs in a marketplace is enticing. But most research has led me to projects that have a buy-in fee (understandably) or the game itself doesn't seem that interesting. People will already pay me to do things that aren't playing fun games, I'm not looking for another, particularly one that doesn't pay well. Also, I have a hard time believing that a game that isn't fun first, would have NFTs that retain value. To be able to sell a set of armor for any substantial amount of money you need demand, you need a dedicated player community.
When I heard Gods Unchained was genuinely free to play I had to give it a shot. Here is what I discovered:
Gods Unchained is a game made very much in the image of Hearthstone (it's made with Chris Clay, former game director of Magic The Gathering Arena). You start off with very basic cards and through playing you earn packs, and three different kinds of currencies that can be used to do various things (including minting entirely unique non-fungible tokens that you can keep or sell).
If you every enjoyed Hearthstone, even if you've long ago left it behind like I have; you will enjoy Gods Unchained. Anyone who has played Hearthstone will quickly pick up both the basic and advanced mechanics. Cards can be purchased, and sold, or you can expand your collection solely with rewards. The higher in the ranks you get, the more handsome the rewards.
Since Gods Unchained is truly as free as you want it to be, I recommend every fan of Hearthstone or MTG Arena check it out. I can't think of any reason why this game won't fizzle out, even if NFTs are just a fad, this game is fun. Besides: who wouldn't want to play a CCG where you can earn and actually own your cards?
