One of my favorite games to show friends and family who don't generally play board games or card games is Exploding Kittens.
When I caught wind of RPG Battles, the reviews were comparing it to Exploding Kittens. This seemed strange to me given the name RPG Battles. The art style seemed to match the glaring title and borrow heavily from popular RPG titles. "Why is this medieval fantasy game, billing itself an RPG card game, be drawing consistent comparisons to Exploding Kittens?", I thought to myself.
After playing RPG Battles, it's the perfect game to introduce a casual crowd to Roleplaying staples like: equipment & weapons, loot, healing potions, character classes, monsters, D20s, and things like attack bonuses or armor rating.
In a game of RPG Battles, each player picks one of six characters, each representing standard-fare fantasy roleplaying games: the Human Sorceress, the Elf Rogue, The Human Monk, The Dwarf Ranger, The Human Paladin, and The Human Fighter. Each player starts off with a 5 cards (aside from the Sorceress starting with 7 cards, thanks to her 'Bag of Holding') including a teleport card that allows them to skip a potentially deadly encounter with a monster. Players go around the table drawing cards, which range from equipment buffs, healing potions, to banes like traps and monsters. There is no incentive or benefit from fighting monsters or encountering traps, the best thing that can happen is you suffer no damage.
This game is a quick learn for anyone familiar with Exploding Kittens, and will click after their first turn in their first game. It's an easy game that should be a great meeting place for a board game enthusiast to meet a casual spouse, friend, or family member.
For Exploding Kittens type social fun, with recognizable light-RPG mechanics RPG Battles deserves the negligible space it will take up on your game shelf and affordable $20 sticker.
